Spring Brings Parasites, We Bring Prevention

This Spring, we are getting the word out about parasites. Heartworm is a disease transmitted by mosquitos. Fleas can carry intestinal parasites. Ticks can carry diseases as well. All these parasites can carry disease, the best form of prevention is preventative.

In this month, we focus on our flea / tick preventatives. If you ever have a question about preventatives, parasites, or any of the diseases they carry, please contact our office.

There are constant changes and updates within veterinary medicine and we realize it can be challenging trying to determine what product is best for YOUR pet. To make it easier, we have done the work for you. Here is a breakdown of our recommended topical preventatives for your pet.

Cats: Revolution

Revolution is the first ever FDA-approved, topically applied medication for cats that:

  • Kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching-literally paralyzing the egg!
  • Prevents heartworm disease -A disease that is extremely difficult to diagnose in cats.
  • Treats and controls ear mites.
  • Treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. Both of these parasites are considered "Zoonotic". This means that your cat can transfer them to YOU!
  • Does not prevent against ticks, if you have found ticks on your cat consider Frontline Plus.

Revolution is applied once per month on the skin between the shoulders of the cat. Revolution enters the bloodstream through the skin and concentrations of the medication in blood and tissues help to prevent heartworm disease, roundworms and hookworms. Revolution then redistributes to provide protection against fleas, flea eggs and ear mites.

Dogs: Vectra 3D
Vectra 3D is a monthly topical only available through licensed, practicing veterinarians.

  • Repels and kills adult fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, lice, mites and sand flies.
  • Repellent action helps reduce the risk of tick-borne disease transmission.
  • Kills on contact; Parasites do not have to bite to die.
  • Starts killing fleas within 2 hours.
  • Remains effective after bathing and swimming.
  • Protection for puppies as young as 7 weeks of age.
  • Do not use on cats.

We do carry other flea/tick products, but none are as effective as these two. We are here to prevent disease, and to prevent disease we need to prevent parasites. Hopefully this information will assist you in making the best choice for the type of preventative your cat or dog should be on. If you have any questions, again, please do not hestitate to call!
