Homebound Cats
Matters of opinion are rarely affected by statistics, unless the statistics can prove a “life and death” differentiation. Those studying the life span of cats generally agree that the life span of a cat that is allowed outside, even if only let out during designated hours, is three to five years. The cat that is housed strictly indoors is fifteen to twenty years. Be reminded that these are only averages.
This should indicate to the cat owner that the dangers of allowing a cat to roam free are of greater concern than the ideological convictions against keeping the cat inside. The cat runs the same risks as the dog when subjected to the “great outdoors”.
Humane societies, animal control agencies, and animal interest groups have spent years trying to educate the public about the precautions that will protect animals. Too many cats are being unwilling subjected to an endless list of suffering.
- Injured by cars and left to die
- Mutilation by fights
- Exposure to serious diseases
- Exposure to parasites
- Shot, poisoned, trapped or tortured
Understanding the dangers of the outdoors is just the beginning for the acceptance of housing cats indoors.
The cat owner must to be prepared to provide for the needs of the cat and assure normal feline activity.
Don’t fall prey to the myth that cats are non-trainable. They are no less intelligent than the dog. Some habits like scratching, you will not be able to stop, but you can divert this activity away from your furniture and curtains by providing proper chasing, scratching, and climbing toys.
Those who insist that the outdoors is a necessary part of health and recreation for the cat should remember that you can leash train a cat. There are also many types of enclosures that will safely contain a cat in your yard, allowing the pleasures of the outdoors without the dangers of roaming free.
Cats raised indoors are perfectly content with their world. Cats who have experienced the outdoors will need some time adjust, but will eventually learn to relax and enjoy the comforts of home.
